Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

PCOS is a medical condition in which the woman’s ovaries produce immature or partially mature eggs in large quantities that can eventually develop into cysts in the ovaries. As a result, the ovaries enlarge and produce significant amounts of male hormones (androgens), leading to infertility, irregular menstrual cycles, hair loss, and abnormal weight gain. The major features of PCOS include menstrual dysfunction, anovulation and signs of hyperandrogenism.

PCOS can be diagnosed through a CT scan or an ultrasound.

In Ayurveda PCOS is considered a result of Kapha Vata imbalance with the involvement of Pitta sometimes leading to hormonal imbalance, Ama (toxins) accumulaton and reproductive system dysfunction. Ayurvedic treatments will focus on balancing doshas (Kapha, Vata, Pitta), regulating agni, shodana (detoxification) which include vamana (emesis), virechana (purgation) and/or vasti (medicated enema) depending on the body type.

Your Ayurvedic physician will recommend ayurvedic medication along with a specified diet and lifestyle depending on your body type.
