Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by persistently high blood glucose (sugar) levels resulting from inadequate insulin production, insulin resistance pr inappropriate glucagon secretion. There are mainly two types are type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
The symptoms of type 1 and type 2 diabetes are feeling more thirsty than usual, urinating often losing weight without trying, feeling tired and weak, feeling irritable or having other mood changes and/or having blurry vision. The causes are insulin resistance, autoimmune disease, hormonal imbalance, pancreatic damage, and genetic mutations.
Health providers diagnose diabetes by checking your glucose level in a blood test, fasting blood glucose test or glycated Hemoglobin test.
Diabetes is referred to as Prameha in Ayurveda, which predominantly involves Kapha and Vata dosha, resulting in improper metabolism and ojas depletion. Sedentary lifestyle, excessive intake of sweet, heavy and unctuous foods, stress, and/or genetics are responsible for prameha. Ayurveda emphasizes individualized treatment based on dosha imbalance.
