Allergic Dermatitis

Allergic dermatitis is a delayed type of induced sensitivity (Allergy) resulting from cutaneous (Skin) contact with a specific allergen to which the patient has developed a specific sensitivity. Dermatitis is a general term for skin inflammation and there are different types including Allergic Contact Dermatitis, Atopic dermatitis (Eczema) and Irritant Contact Dermatitis.

The most common causes of allergic dermatitis include plants are parts of plants like poison ivy, skin care products with fragrances, metals such as nickel, acids, cleaning products, hair dyes, soaps, and plastics. The symptoms of allergic dermatitis include a rash on your skin, red or purple than your natural skin tone, swollen, blisters, oozing fluid, painful with a burning or stinging sensation, itchy.

Your diagnosis is based on blood tests, skin biopsy, and fungal scrapings of skin for microscopy and culture.

Chronic Dermatitis may need a longer treatment course. Ayurveda treats the root cause and not just the symptoms. Ayurveda sees Allergic dermatitis as Vicharchika often caused by derangement of Pitta- Kapha doshas sometimes involving Tridoshas. It involves the administration of Oral herbal medication, external applications including medicated oils and therapies like

  • Virechana (Purgation)
  • Raktamokshana (Blood letting)
  • Vasti – Kashaya/Sneha (medicated enema)
