Obesity is a medical condition characterized by excessive body fat accumulation that increases the risk of various health problems. It is typically measured using the Body Mass Index (BMI) where a BMI of 30 (or) higher.
The causes include unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity, genetics, medical conditions like hypothyroidism, psychological factors like stress, environmental and social factors. The symptoms are excess body fat, shortness of breath, increased sweating, fatigue, joint and back pain, and mental health issues.
This must be diagnosed through BMI calculation, Body fat percentage, and blood tests like cholesterol, blood sugar, thyroid function, and liver function tests. If not managed properly Obesity may lead to comorbidities like Metabolic Syndrome, Diabetes mellitus, Hypertension, Dyslipidemia, Coronary Heart Disease, Osteoarthritis, Stroke, Depression, Infertility etc.
In Ayurveda, Obesity is known as Sthoulya and is primarily caused by an imbalance in Kapha dosha and Medho Dhatu ( fat tissue ). Is ia often linked to Ama (toxins) build up and sedentary life style.
