A herniated disc fragment comes from the nucleus pulposus of the disc(jelly like structure which is remnant of the embryonic noto chord). In the normal condition, this nucleus in the disc center securely contained by the annulus fibrosis. When a part of the nucleus herniates, it irritates and/or compresses the adjacent nerve root. This can cause the pain syndrome known as sciatica / lumbar radiculopathy. Over time, the disc becomes less effective and may become displaced.
This may be due to aging, traumatic injuries like falls, performing repetitive bending or twisting motions or improper lifting of heavy objects. It’s common for a herniated disc in your lower back to cause Sciatica pain. Other symptoms of a slipped disc in your lower back may include lower back pain, tingling or numbness in your leg and feet, muscle weakness, neck pain, pain near or between your shoulder blades and pain that travels to your shoulder, arm and sometimes your hand and fingers. It may be diagnosed through an MRI scan, X-ray or CT.
