Ulcerative colitis is a condition that causes inflammation and ulcers inside your colon (large intestine). It’s a diffuse nonspecific inflammatory disease in which the etiology is unknown. The colonic mucosa proximal from the rectum is persistently affected, frequently involving erosions and/or ulcers as well as repeated cycles of relapse and remission and potential extraintestinal manifestations.
Anyone can get Ulcerative colitis but the risk is greater based on age, genetics, gut microbiome and other factors like stress and diet. The symptoms often get worse over time. Initially, you may notice signs of mild Ulcerative colitis including diarrhea (may or may not be bloody), urgent bowel movements, mild abdominal cramping or tenderness, blood mucus or pus in your stool, fatigue, sudden weight loss, nausea, and fever.
This can be diagnosed through blood tests, stool samples, imaging tests like colonoscopy.
In Ayurveda, Ulcerative colitis is seen as a condition involving an imbalance in Pitta dosha with involvement of Vata, resulting in inflammation, ulceration, and bleeding in the colon. Your Ayurvedic physician focuses on clearing channels by moving and dislodging doshas in the body with a combination of Ayurvedic medicines that help in pacifying VataPitta doshas.
You will also be advised specific diet and lifestyle regimen to pevent worsening of your symptoms. The diet is usually light, cooling, gut friendly like rice gruel (peya), moong dhal, buttermilk, guava, pomegranate etc. The diet and lifestyle regimen will be tailored by the physician exclusively based on the symptoms of each individual.
