IBS is a group of intestinal symptoms that include abdominal cramping, diarrhoea, constipation, bloating and flatulence. The cause of IBS is not clear but can be related to a disorder of gut-brain interactions which involve the above symptoms. It is a common but uncomfortable gastrointestinal disease or condition that affects your intestine.

Highly fermentable foods and poorly absorbable sugars usually aggravates symptoms. Environmental factors like a natural disaster that causes air pollution or poor sanitation and stress may be triggers to IBS.
In Ayurveda, IBS is understood as Grahani disorder which involves the dysfunction of the digestive fire (agni) and imbalance of Vata and Pitta doshas sometimes Kapha too depending on the symptoms.
The treatment principles in Ayurveda include Deepana & pachana (stimulating the digestive fire) with the help of Ayurvedic medication. Grahi dravyas are prescribed in order to correct the abnormal frequency of stools. Shodana (detoxification) may prescribe depending on the symptoms. Vasti (medicated enema) with medicated oils also help in pacifying the symptoms.
